knitting and embroidery

Knitting is a type of stitch that is weaved in with needles. Unlike the common small needles we all are aware of, knitting is done with long needles that are at least one foot in length. They could be shorter too.

Knitting began as a hobby among Indian women who would chat with their folks outside their homes. Soon they could knit as fast as they could think and create beautiful pieces to wear. From a child's dress to a top for a lady, knitting can be used to make clothes. Also with the variations in colours different effects are achieved, hence no two knitted materials will look the same. Also different needle sizes bring in different effects so you have a creation like nobody else.

There are two types of needles one that is flat and the other that is circular. Each stitch on different needles brings in a different look. For instance the flat needles are used to procure a flat effect. So for scarves, blankets, front and back of sweaters flat knitting is used as against circular knitting that is used for caps, socks, hats, mitten and the sleeves as a circular effect is achieved with these needles.

Hence when undertaking the knitting of a sweater both types of needles are required as the curves of the sleeves are not attainable without the curvy needles and the flat surfaces are not done without the flat needles.

Also as knitting is mostly done with woollen material or thick strings, it is ideal for winters. No doubt we have pullovers and sweaters made of woollen, a closer look at them and you will realise that they are all knitted.

As knitting became widely popular, knitting machines are readily available. But one can create more designs with the hand. Nowadays besides mothers teaching their children, knitting is also taught in school for girls to get a hang of this beautiful art.

Embroidery on the other hand is an art that uses threads to decorate a simple material. So if one has purchased a self-coloured kurta or dress, embroidery work on it will bring life to the otherwise staid garment.

India is famous for its handwork in embroidery. Each city in the country has a different style of embroidery. Choose from kathia-work, zari-work, chiken-work, mirror-work, zardosi and much more. It all depends on what you want to embroider and what you like.

Even brides in India have their wedding day dresses embroidered in heavy gold colour. Because this art has the look that races ahead of any other style. Embroidery from Gujarat has a lot of mirrors on it and the look is so beautiful you would love to buy it all.

If you have a penchant for embroidery, love to spend hours working with threads then you must make this hobby a beautiful career. Begin with classes and see how people queue up to learn the art.

You could start knitting and embroidery classes for individuals who would love to learn different thread art from which they too could earn their daily bread.
