foreign language

A foreign language is a language which is not spoken by the masses of a particular country. A good example would be a Japanese person who is able to speak French fluently has learnt French as a foreign language, as it isn’t his native language. Most education systems around the world teach children at a young age the proficiency of learning more than one language, making them bilingual. In most cases the first language a child learns to speak is usually the native language also known as the mother tongue. In the state of Maharashtra in India, Marathi is the first language taught in schools however children are also trained in Hindi and English.

Knowing a foreign language is beneficial for you to secure a good job as many companies look for people who are multilingual. People who are multilingual can often get success in any career path they follow. By learning a foreign language you can also teach the language as a subject. There are various methods which can be incorporated in teaching a foreign language. By educating a child at an early age with the rules of grammar and sentence structuring, the child grows up to have a firm grasp on the spoken as well as the written word. Tapes are also used to listen giving you different situations to understand.

Many families who leave their homeland and settle in another country begin to learn the language that is spoken in their new country. Hence for them, teaching their children their language would be a foreign language. Tutoring or getting private classes helps more as it is taught by a native of the land. However even though getting a private tutor is an effective way of learning, it is very expensive.

European countries except for Ireland and the United Kingdom have begun to emphasize the importance of learning a foreign language and have made it compulsory to learn one foreign language. It usually begins at the end of primary school and beginning of secondary school. Schools in Europe are known to teach English which is more rigorous and thorough than what is taught in America. Popular languages in America include Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic, German and Japanese. India and the European Union have the largest democracies and they also have a large number of official languages. This is largely due to the focus on unity in diversity.

Many people, including students wish to learn English as it’s a universally accepted language. With the introduction of TEFL an abbreviation for Teaching English as a Foreign Language, anyone can learn English for whom it is not their mother tongue. TEFL can be introduced in schools, colleges and university. You usually need to learn it in your own country. For example if you have gone on an education visa abroad in order to master a language, then it is advisable to live with a local family who can converse with you and correct you when you go wrong. This increases chances of you being fluent much faster.
